One of the major issues Nigerians are confronted with is the issue of stable electricity especially in the rural area. Power is indispensable; a core element in nation building. Power supply comes in terms of time and cost. Majority of the populace live on less than 0.5kwh/day.
In 2005 the Federal Government of Nigeria established the Rural Electrification Agency under section 88 of Electrical Power Sector Act (EPSRA) with the mandate to promote stable power supply in the country and to increase the access to electricity especially in the rural area. This mandate is achieved by providing an off grid electrification strategy to complement the national grid supply that is available to generate, distribute power supply and metering that are economically viable, demand drive, market oriented and private sector driven. The Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) was implemented by REA, the initiative is private sector driven and its seeks to bridged the energy access deficit by providing electricity to households, MSMEs, educational and healthcare facilities in the unserved and underserved rural communities through the deployment of mini grid, Solar Home System (SHS), captive power plants and productive use appliance to ensure sustainability of these off-grid solutions. The Federal Government of Nigeria has the support of the World Bank and African Development Bank on this initiative.
On the 19th of May 2021, Morton 78 signed partnership agreement with REA, to this end; Morton 78 has been able to cover the South-West of Nigeria including Lagos State, Kwara State, Osun State, Ekiti State and Ogun State. Her technical training has reached over 100 Nigerians; also Morton is able to provide Alternative Power to over 1,500 Nigerians while impacting the lives of over 5,000 Nigerians.
The beneficiaries of the alternate power are the market women, families, private business owners, religious organizations, and private individuals. Our goal in the next one year is to train over 1000 Nigerians while providing power to over 20,000 Nigerians. Impacting the lives of over 50,000 Nigerians is our goal.
This is designed to cater for both power supply and affordability, and doing this would ensure we gradually alleviate both energy needs and financial need.
With Morton 78 partnership with REA a sustainable future is ensured.
